We recently explored this region of the Sierra Nevada on a one day hiking trip. i have traveled over and explored the Lakes basin area before, but for what ever reason had never been on this route. (so many great choices in the Sierra). I have to agree with popular opinion here and say this trail loop is easily top 2 or three of all trails i have hiked North of Truckee California in the Sierra.

Loop trail Gold lake Highway region

Try this 6.8-mile loop trail near Graeagle, California is located off the Lakes Basin (Seasonal Highway). Generally considered a challenging route with 1883 elevation gain and rocky trail, I think that is a bit miss leading since over half this hike is rather easy to moderate. The hike up Mt. Elwell is where the change lies.. It takes an average of 3 h 56 min to complete. This is a popular trail for backpacking, hiking, and horseback riding, but you can still enjoy some solitude during quieter times of day. The best times to visit this trail are June through November. Dogs are welcome, but must be on a leash.

Lakes Basin – Big Bear Lake

The Variety of Lakes

Multiple lakes are on this route so water sources are plentiful. Bring you pole as back country fishing can be a delight in these backcountry lakes. This is the most popular hike in Lakes Basin Recreation Area. It skirts Big Bear Lake, Little Bear Lake and Cub Lake for a 2 mile loop that connects to several other trails. Trust me take a few extra minutes and branch off to Silver and Round Lakes as well and they are spectacular spots.

Backpackers are required to have a valid California State Campfire Permit. and Backpacking is only allowed on the route after you make it past Long Lake and get further away from the first set of lakes. These are available at Forest Service Ranger Stations or online at https://www.readyforwildfire.org/permits/campfire-permit/
