Tahoe National Forest Seasonal Announces Roads Openings

Tahoe National Forest Seasonal Announces Roads Openings

NEVADA CITY, Calif. – As of April 1, many roads and trails are open for the season on the west side of the Tahoe National Forest. Most roads and trails on the east side of the Forest will open April 24. Wet and snowy weather necessitates closure of some routes to prevent resource damage. Forest visitors should review the Motor Vehicle Use Map (MVUM) for information on specific roads and motorized trails.

Last year, the Tahoe National Forest issued an MVUM that provides a complete list of authorized roads and trails for motorized use. For those routes with seasonal closures, the MVUM lists opening and closing dates, as well as any other restrictions. Most seasonal routes on the west side of the Tahoe National Forest, including the American River and Yuba River ranger districts, are open from April 1 to December 31. Most seasonal routes on the east side of the Forest, including the Sierraville and Truckee ranger districts, are open from April 24 to December 31. Exceptions are listed on the MVUM.

“With the current drought, many seasonal routes on the Tahoe National Forest are dry and free of snow,” said Forest Supervisor Tom Quinn. “However, when visiting the Forest early in the season, especially at higher elevations, remember that weather conditions can change quickly and snow or other inclement weather is still possible.”

A complete list of roads and trails and closure dates or restrictions can be found on the Tahoe National Forest 2013 Motor Vehicle Use Maps. The maps are free and available at any Tahoe National Forest office, as well as online at http://www.fs.usda.gov/main/tahoe/maps-pubs.

Digital versions of the maps can also be downloaded to mobile devices through the Avenza PDF Map app.tahoenationalforest1
