The first time I visited the 20 Lakes basin in September 2017, I was stunned at the beauty of Greenstone Lake as it appears below North Peak. Surprised at the late season snow that stills draped the region, I wondered how this location escaped me for so long.

A Palette of Colors
As you approach Greenstone Lake, it’s immediately evident that this place is unique and unlike the calming clear waters of Saddlebag Lake that you recently left behind. The moment you lay your eyes on Greenstone Lake, you’ll be captivated by its sheer natural beauty. Sitting on the boarder of the Southern edge of Hoover Wilderness, greenstone Lake is the stepping stone lake of the 20 lakes basin. The first thing that strikes you is the breathtaking view of North Peak mirrored in the clear, almost greenish-blue waters of the lake. it has often made me wonder why this stunning area was not easily mapped into Yosemite National Park as its wild brilliance certainly seems fitting. I will assume like many things the flow of the water and the watershed it serves may have played a role in its definition.
The Scenic Surroundings
Greenstone Lake is not just about its striking aquamarine waters. The lake is bordered by a picturesque meadow on one side and a gently babbling creek on the other. The combination of water, meadow, and creek creates a scene straight out of a postcard, and you’ll find yourself irresistibly drawn to the serenity of this spot. With granite peaks surrounding the Southern and Western edges of the lake, late season snow is often found in this basin and the surrounding creek and marsh areas can be filled with summer wild flowers and soggy conditions late into the summer

On the north side of the lake, you’ll find enticing trails that beckon you to explore the 20 Lakes region. This region boasts several pristine alpine lakes, including Wasco, Steelhead, and Shamrock lakes, each offering its own unique charm. Hiking in this area presents a chance to immerse yourself in the breathtaking high-country scenery, surrounded by snow-capped peaks and serene waters. Each lake inter connected with streams that combine and flow North easterly towards Lundy canyon and Mono Lake below.
Heading West
Alternatively, if you choose to head west from the south shore of Greenstone Lake, you’ll find a trail that follows a cascading creek. This trail leads you up to the Conness Lakes, another set of stunning alpine jewels. The Conness Lakes are tucked away in a tranquil valley beneath the iconic Mount Conness, and the hike is an opportunity to soak in the tranquil beauty of the wilderness.
Speaking of Mt. Conness this magnificent giant is a favorite for peak climbers in the region. The peak itself stands at an elevation of approximately 12,590 feet (3,838 meters), offering breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding wilderness. Ensure you are in good physical condition for the hike, as the high-altitude terrain at 10,000 feet the entire trip can be challenging.
Backpacking Options
You can Backpack into the 20 Lakes basin using a Hoover Wilderness Permit. The saddlebags Lake trailhead has no Quota limits so getting a permit here is easy, if you strike out in Yosemite is definitely an option if you are on the east side of the park. The Hoover Wilderness Permit Station is located in Bridgeport Ca, about 20 miles North of Highway 20.
You will find few trees in this glacial moraine region and seasonal mosquitos are vicious around these lakes, still the views and water variety are truly epic and well worth a night or two in the wilderness. some backpackers even cross over into Yosemite National park North of North Peak and drop into the McCabe Lakes region of the park.

Directions:
Leave Hwy 395 at Hwy 120. Follow Tioga Pass Road toward Yosemite. Turn North onto well marked dirt road to Saddlebag Lake. Trailhead parking is a dirt lot at the end of the road. Trail starts near Saddlebag Lake campground and dam, the shortest route is found by crossing the dam and following the trail on the West shore of saddle bag lake. Alternative routes on the East short are longer. In the summer season tickets can be purchased for a water taxi from Saddlebag Lake Resort that goes to the end of the lake.
